Follicular Unit Extraction

Hair transplants have come a long way since the 1950s when they began to make their way into mainstream American culture. Welcome to the 21st-century and the modern-day method of advanced hair replacement technology.

Follicular unit extraction (FUE) has become the most popular alternative to traditional hair transplant procedures, quickly making its way to the most sought-after hair transplant method available. FUE is definitely not your grandfather’s hair transplant.

For quite some time, follicular unit transfer (FUT) was the go-to for hair transplants. The problem with FUT however, is that it leaves a linear scar in the donor site of harvested hair. It can also be painful, and cause swelling and noticeable discomfort both during and after the procedure.

FUE, on the other hand, is different. Rather than harvesting a strip of hair from the back of the scalp, it uses the latest technology to remove each follicular unit from the scalp. There is no strip. And better yet, no scarring. What’s more is with FUE, discomfort during and post-surgery are relatively pain-free. Recovery time is also much shorter than with the FUT method of extraction.

Before and After

What is FUE?

FUE is a state-of-the-art hair transplant procedure that uses a small punch to remove individual follicular units. These are known as follicular unit grafts, and are typically taken from the back of the scalp where there is still ample hair growth. Once the desired number of grafts have been removed, they are then transplanted onto the head where there is thinning hair or complete hair loss.

How is A FUE Transplant Performed?

A FUE hair transplant procedure is relatively simple. Many patients are in and out of our office in just a few short hours, and ready to get back to their every day activities in just a couple days.

The first part of the procedure involves taking individual follicular unit grafts (hair groupings of 1-4 hairs) from the donor area of the scalp. This is typically on the back and sides of the scalp, in DHT resistant areas. The follicular unit grafts are taken one at a time by means of a tiny punch. The punch used is usually only 0.7-1mm in size, which allows for hair extraction with no visible scarring.

Before follicular unit grafts are extracted, our doctor will use a small sharp punch to score the skin around the follicular unit. It is then the small 0.7-1mm punch is used to go deeper into the tissue that surrounds the follicular unit. This dull punch encases the entire follicular unit, separating it from the soft tissues that surround it. Once the follicular unit is disconnected from the soft tissues, extraction can take place.

Once all necessary follicular unit grafts have been extracted, they are then transferred to the recipient area. Each individual graft is carefully placed in the thinning or balding areas of the scalp using NeoGraft. This groundbreaking hair transplant technology is basically an extension of the doctor’s hand, allowing for meticulous placement of grafts in the recipient area.

What are the Advantages of FUE?

All hair transplant procedures are not created equal. There are several advantages of FUE compared to the traditional FUT procedure. These include:

  • FUE is Less Invasive than Traditional Hair Transplant Methods

Traditional hair transplant methods take a strip of the scalp to harvest hair follicles for the transplant. This leaves a noticeable scar on the donor area from sutures or staples that are used to close the wound.

With the FUE method of extraction however, small punches are made into the skin where hair follicles are then removed. This leaves little or no visible scarring, as well as a shorter recovery period.

  • FUE Leaves No Linear Scar

The linear scar left by traditional hair transplant techniques is very telltale of the individual receiving a hair transplant. While an extremely adept surgeon can diminish the appearance of this linear scar, with the FUT method a scar will always entail, no matter what is done to lessen its appearance.

While FUE will not leave a linear scar, there is some slight scarring involved in the process. This advanced hair transplant procedure will only leave small, virtually undetectable circular scars from where hair is harvested from the side or back of the scalp. When the procedure is done correctly however, these very small circular scars are unnoticeable, even when hair is worn closely cropped.

  • Faster Healing Time with FUE

Healing from a FUE hair transplant is quick. Many patients are back to engaging in their regular every day activities after only a couple of days. As individual results do vary, a person should plan on taking off anywhere from 2 days to a week after their surgery. It typically takes around 10 days for the donor site to fully heal.

People who live an active lifestyle who are thinking about a hair transplant will find FUE offers the shortest recovery time of any other hair transplant procedure available. While you might want to wait a week or so before hitting the gym or training for that 10K, you’ll find the healing time with FUE gives you the opportunity to get back to what you love to do faster than any other hair transplant procedure.

  • FUE Isn’t Just for Hair Transplants on Your Head

While many people are looking to restore the hair on their head when the undergo a hair transplant procedure, others are looking to repair hair on other parts of their body. FUE is also excellent for eyebrow restoration, beard restoration, and cleft lip mustache repair.

Men and women looking for the latest advancements in hair transplant technology, will find FUE to help with their hair restoration needs. If you’re a woman who wants to bring shape and beauty back to her brows, FUE is one of the best ways to do so. Men who want a fuller beard will find FUE to seamlessly fill in those annoying patchy spots, bringing their beard back to its original ample shape.

Are You a Good Candidate for FUE Hair Restoration?

It’s fundamental that before scheduling your FUE hair restoration procedure that you understand whether or not you’re a good candidate for a hair transplant. If you want to cover thinning or balding areas of the head, you must have a donor area with plenty of hair to use for the procedure.

Sources hair is sourced for FUE include:

  • The back or sides of the head where there is moderate to abundant hair growth
  • Beard hair
  • Hair from the body that is similar in texture to the hair where the transplant is desired

FUE is best suited for men and women with enough hair to cover the desired area. Men that are almost or completely bald typically don’t qualify for a FUE hair transplant. Other individuals who will not likely find FUE to be successful include:
